If you need to change your Microsoft 365 password, whether for security reasons or because it has been a while since you last updated it, here is how to do it.
If you know your current password
Open your browser and go to myaccount.microsoft.com. Sign in with your current email and password. Click on Security on the left, then click Change password. Enter your current password, then type your new password twice. Click Submit. Your password is now updated and you will need to use the new one on all your devices and apps.
If you have forgotten your password
For security reasons, self-service password reset is not enabled on most managed Microsoft 365 accounts. This means you cannot reset your own password through the Microsoft sign-in page. Instead, contact your IT provider and they will reset it for you. If Recloud manages your account, get in touch with us and we will reset your password and get you back in as quickly as possible.
This is a deliberate security measure. Self-service resets can be exploited by attackers who have access to a staff member's phone or personal email. Having your IT provider handle resets means there is always a human verification step in the process.
After your password is changed
Once your password is changed, you will be signed out of most devices and apps. You will need to sign in again on your computer, phone and any other device where you use your Microsoft 365 account. If you use Outlook on your phone, it will usually prompt you to enter the new password automatically.
If you use Microsoft Authenticator, your app should continue to work as before. If it prompts you to re-authenticate, follow the on-screen instructions and sign in with your new password.
Tips for choosing a strong password
Use at least 14 to 16 characters, prioritising length over complexity. Mix uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers and special characters. Do not reuse passwords from other accounts. If you struggle to remember passwords, ask your IT provider about a password manager. When to get help
If you are locked out of your account, if your password is not being accepted after a change or if you suspect someone else has changed your password, contact your IT provider immediately. Recloud can reset access and check for any unauthorised activity on your account.
