If you are in a Microsoft Teams meeting and need to leave, you want to make sure you do not accidentally end the meeting for everyone else. Here is how to leave safely.
How to leave a meeting
At the top of the meeting window, you will see a red Leave button. Click Leave. This takes you out of the meeting while everyone else stays connected. That is all you need to do.
The difference between Leave and End meeting
If you are the meeting organiser, you may see two options when you click the dropdown arrow next to the Leave button. Leave removes you from the meeting but keeps it running for everyone else. End meeting ends the call for all participants immediately. If you only need to step out, always click Leave, not End meeting.
What happens to the meeting after you leave
The meeting continues as normal for everyone else. If you were sharing your screen, the share will stop when you leave. If you were the only other participant, the last person remaining can continue or end the meeting themselves. The meeting chat and any files shared during the meeting remain accessible in the Teams chat history after the meeting ends.
Rejoining a meeting you left
If you need to come back after leaving, open the Teams calendar and find the meeting. Click Join. You will re-enter the meeting as normal. If the meeting is still in progress, everyone will see you rejoin.
If you accidentally end the meeting
If you click End meeting by mistake, the meeting ends for everyone. You will need to start a new meeting or ask someone else to start one. There is no way to undo it once it is done, so it is worth being careful with that button.
When to get help
