Whether you need to capture an error message, save something from your screen or show someone what you are looking at, taking a screenshot on Windows 11 is quick and easy.
Capture your entire screen
Press the Print Screen key on your keyboard. It is usually labelled PrtScn and sits near the top right of your keyboard. This copies your entire screen to the clipboard. Open a document, email or chat and press Ctrl + V to paste it.
Capture just one part of your screen
Press Windows + Shift + S. Your screen will dim and a small toolbar will appear at the top. Click and drag to select the area you want to capture. The screenshot is copied to your clipboard and you can paste it anywhere with Ctrl + V. You will also see a notification pop up in the bottom right corner. Click on it if you want to edit or save the screenshot as a file.
Capture a single window
Press Windows + Shift + S, then click the window icon in the toolbar at the top (the second option). Click on the window you want to capture. This is useful when you have multiple windows open and only want to capture one.
Where screenshots are saved
If you use the Snipping Tool or click on the notification after taking a screenshot, you can choose where to save the file. By default, screenshots taken with Windows + Print Screen are saved in your Pictures folder under Screenshots.
When to get help
If the screenshot shortcuts are not working, if your screen capture is showing a black image or if you need to set up screen recording for training or documentation, your IT provider can help configure the right tools for your needs.
